Mistakes To Avoid At A Winery

If you really enjoy wine, there's a good chance that you have an interest in where it is made. You might decide to go down to a winery with your significant other or some friends to see how they make and ferment the wine and to do some wine tastings. Because you might have never been to a winery before, you might not know the etiquette of the wine tasting rooms. Here are some common problems that many people make and how you can avoid them.

1. You Wear Perfume or Cologne

A lot of the wine tasting experience involves you smelling the wine before drinking it. If you pervert everyone else's ability to smell the wine by wearing a lot of perfume or cologne, you are going to ruin your own experience as well as the experience of people around you. This is going to not be enjoyable for anyone so be sure that you are polite and avoid wearing any strong scents.

2. You Don't Know Your Limits

You don't have to spit out the wine after you have finished tasting it. You can absolutely drink a little bit of it to allow yourself to loosen up and have some fun. However, you should absolutely not get drunk. If you are visiting a lot of different tasting rooms in the next few hours, be sure that you know your limit so as not to get any more inebriated than tipsy. The reason for this is that a drunk in a tasting room can be too loud and obnoxious for other people to enjoy their time and takes up the time of the staff who are trying to get as many people wine as possible. It is inconsiderate.

3. You Didn't Consider the Tipping Policy

The last thing that you need to do is contact the winery ahead of time and ask about what their tipping and purchasing policy is. Some wineries don't care how many bottles of wine you order and refuse to accept tips for their employees. Others will waive the entrance fee to the winery if you purchase a certain number of bottles and prefer that you tip the employees. Bring cash if you don't know, but it is better to call ahead and ask what is standard.
